Loan competes on the world stage

Chugiak High senior Kinsey Loan (APU Nordic Ski Center) finished 58th in the women's 1.2-kilometer sprint qualifying race at the World Junior Championships on Jan. 28 in Otepaa, Estonia. Loan's time of 3:37.61 was about 24 seconds behind top finisher Hanna Kolb of Germany.

Loan's performance in the sprint race came two days after she placed 68th overall in the 5-kilometer freestyle race with a time of 16:00.3.

Loan earned her way onto the U.S. Junior Worlds team with a strong showing at the national championships earlier in January in Rumford, Maine, where she was second in the 5-kilometer junior freestyle race and 11th among all U.S. women in the freestyle sprint race.

Martin wins state title

Eagle River's Matt Martin claimed a state title on Jan. 29 when he won the Alaska Three-Position Air Rifle Championship at East High.

Martin, a senior at Chugiak High who shoots for the Borealis Bullseyes, was the only shooter to nail a pair of perfect 100s during the match. His score of 681.2 was eight points higher than Anchorage's Spencer Greenstein.

Martin's showing helped the Bullseyes claim the team title over second-place West Valley of Fairbanks.
