Chugiak boys No. 7 in WPI rankings

The Chugiak boys were the top-ranked local high school hoops team in the first Winning Percentage Index (WPI) rankings released this season by the Alaska School Activities Association (ASAA) on Feb. 1.

The Mustangs checked in at No. 7 among Class 4A boys in the rankings, which take into account winning percentage and strength of schedule to determine how the state's basketball teams stack up.

The Chugiak girls ranked 10th in the initial rankings, Eagle River's boys were 21st and the Eagle River girls were ranked 22nd.

The WPI rankings are used to determine how teams are seeded at the state basketball tournaments in March. The rankings are released twice during the season – on Feb. 1 and March 1.
