Brewers shine on Tour

Chugiak High senior Kenny Brewer had plenty of competition in the men's 40-kilometer Tour of Anchorage on March 6. And that was just within his own family.

Brewer outlasted twin brother Peter to win the race in a time of 1 hour, 52 minutes and 26.9 seconds. Peter Brewer was less than two minutes back of his brother in third, with Anchorage's John Glen sandwiched between them.

Brewer's performance was one of a slew of strong showings by locals in the annual race, which this year attracted nearly 1,500 competitors. Chugiak's Lauren Fritz placed eighth in the women's 50-kilometer race, finishing the grueling course in just under three hours.

Youth got the better of Eagle River's John Wood in the men's 25-kilometer classic race – but just barely. Wood, 63, second overall in the race, finishing eight minutes back of Anchorage 13-year-old Jake Bassett.

Other top local finishers included Chugiak's Cindy Hendel, who finished 16th in the women's 25-K classic race; Eagle River's Steve Bay, who placed 24th in the men's 25-K freestyle; Eagle River's Shannon Faber, who was 25th in the women's 25-K freestyle; and Margaret Cunningham of Eagle River, who was 25th in the women's 40-K.

Mitchell, Tramp earn All-CIC nods

Chugiak's Colby Mitchell and Jessica Tramp each made the All-Cook Inlet Conference basketball team announced last week.

Mitchell, a senior, was the leading scorer for the Chugiak boys this season while Tramp was a junior captain for the Mustang girls.

Each was recognized as part of 12-member All-CIC teams. West's Devon Bookert and Dimond's Keiahnna Engle were named the conference's Most Valuable Players.

Ten other locals made the honorable mention list, including Dylan Fullmer and Greg Ghramm of the Chugiak boys; Nate Yaw, Dominic Young and Kyle Taylor from the Eagle River boys; Mollie Matthis and Kelsey Heller from the Chugiak girls; and Sam Coy, Meghan Byman and Dana Panfil of the Eagle River girls.
