Rebekah Smith of Eagle River was named to the 2010 fall semester dean's list at Ohio Wesleyan University. Smith is a graduate of Chugiak High School. To qualify for dean's list, students must achieve a grade-point average of 3.5 or better in at least three unit courses.
Local graduating seniors have been named to the 2011 Presidential Scholars Program. Eagle River residents Miriam Mezzetti, a student with Interior Distance Education of Alaska, and Jessica K. Wilder of Chugiak High School were among 3,000 candidates selected from nearly 3.2 million students expected to graduate this year. Students are selected for their exceptional performance on either the SAT or ACT and further consideration is based on students' essays, self-assessments, activities, school recommendations and transcripts. Five-hundred semifinalists will be selected in early April.
Ariel Zlatkovski of Eagle River High School represented Alaska as a delegate for the U.S. Senate Youth Program. He met with U.S. Sen. Mark Begich on March 9. While there, Zlatkovski presented his fellow delegates with Alaska flag pins. Zlatkovski also was named to the 2011 Presidential Scholars Program along with two other local students (see previous listing).
Matt Cook of Eagle River was elected student alumni relations board member at the University of Idaho. Cook is a sophomore in public relations. As the new representative, he will serve on the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education Affiliated Student Advancement Programs international board for the May 2011-April 2013 term.
