Mariel Fonteyn of Eagle River is serving with the National Civilian Community Corps, an AmeriCorps program. She began in February and will work for the next 10 months in communities in the northcentral region. On March 17, Fonteyn's team left Vinton, Iowa, to begin its first service project with the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis in St. Paul, Ind. Fonteyn graduated from Chugiak High School and University of Kent Brussels School of International Studies.
The Eagle River Chapter of Ducks Unlimited (DU) recently was named one of DU's Top 100 chapters in the country. The Eagle River Chapter was chosen out of the more than 2,700 DU chapters nationwide. Each year, the list is reserved for those chapters that raise up to $100,000 in grassroots income for DU's conservation mission. Chapters raising more than $100,000 are recognized by the President's Elite award.
