Warmer weather triggers spate of DWI arrests

Anchorage police said they arrested Benjamin Barnes, 26, of Eagle River on May 6 for driving under the influence and driving without insurance after receiving reports of a 1994 GMC pickup crashed in a ditch on Jayhawk Drive in Chugiak.

Barnes tried to walk away from the scene, police spokeswoman Anita Shell said. His breath-alcohol levels were estimated at nearly three times the legal limit, Shell said. Barnes was lodged at Anchorage Jail in lieu of $500 bail.
