Be bear aware, Birchwood
Birchwood residents are reporting several black bears in the area. Moose calves are bringing the bruins in, but so are bird feeders, unsecured garbage and smokers or grills, according to an alert from Birchwood Community Council.
The alert warns residents in the vicinity of Tarika Avenue between Upper Bowery Lane and Steffes Street and behind the Birchwood Saloon to be on alert because a black bear was reported on Tarika and in the vicinity of the power line right of way. A resident of Spruce Crest Drive on Tuesday reported a "large black bear on the deck sampling birdseed," council president Bobbi Wells wrote in the alert this week. Over the weekend, Wells received similar reports from the Richner Road and Beverly Avenue area. Be alert when walking to the mailbox or working in the garden, she warns.
