New CSSB leader is well traveled
Lt. Col. Andrew Mergens assumed command of the 17th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion in a ceremony at Pershing Field on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson July 12.
Mergens replaced Lt. Col. Leslie Caballero, who commanded the battalion for the past 30 months, according to a media advisory issued by the Army. That command included a 12-month tour in Afghanistan. Her next assignment will be with the Brigade Modernization Command at Fort Bilss, Texas.
Mergens has served in Germany; Fort Lewis, Wash.; Saudi Arabia; Fort Bliss, Texas; Fort Knox, Ky.; Ankara, Turkey and Iraq.
He most recently served as an exchange officer with the Australian Defense Force in Canbera.
With 12 companies, detachments and teams, the 1,000-soldier Combat Sustainment Support Battalion is the largest of 18 U.S. Army battalions in Alaska.
