Sheryl Loan wins another Tour Chugiak woman takes eighth expert class title
Alaska Star Staff
For yet another year, Chugiak's Sheryl Loan is riding at the front of the Alaska cycling pack.
Loan, 52, earned a record eighth Tour of Anchorage championship in nine tries on Aug. 14 following the fifth and final stage of the four-day racing series.
Loan's daughter, Kinsey, actually won Stage 5, a loop race around Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Anchorage. But the 18-year-old only made up 36 seconds on her mom, and finished more than three minutes back in third place overall. Amber Stull was second, 2:54 behind the winner.
The same three women swept the top three spots in the expert class last year, with Kinsey Loan finishing second behind her mom.
Sheryl Loan dominated the first three days of the event. She was second in the Kincaid Park time trial on Aug. 17, and followed that with a win in the Kincaid road race later in the day to take a 17-second lead into Stage 3.
On Aug. 18, the elder Loan used her dominant hill climbing skills to essentially finish off her rivals, winning the Upper Huffman hill climb by more than two and a half minutes. The next day, Sheryl Loan didn't let a last-minute course change slow her down one bit, taking the Stage 4 Portage Glacier Road time trial for her third stage win. The race had been scheduled for Chugiak High, but road paving on South Birchwood Loop nixed that idea.
After the first three days of racing, Sheryl Loan's lead had ballooned to 3:28 over Stull and 3:49 over Kinsey.
Troy Henry won the men's expert class, holding off Jeff Ellis by a little more than a minute.
