The 2011 high school volleyball season got underway both unofficially and officially over the past week. On Aug. 20, Service High hosted a jamboree, during which teams played informal games with a running clock. The season got going for real on Aug. 23, and both Chugiak and Eagle River took home victories. The Mustangs beat Bartlett 3-1 (25-14, 25-9, 22-25, 25-20) at Chugiak. Kathleen Gill led the Mustangs with 32 assists and three aces, and Mollie Matthis had 12 kills and three aces. Eagle River got past Service 3-2 (25-19, 21-25, 25-22, 14-25, 15-10). Morgan Wohrle had 21 digs for Eagle River, which also got nine kills from Tess Anderson, five blocks from Kathy Michalski and four from Gabbi LeCates. The two teams face off tonight at 7:15 p.m. at Chugiak High.
